floppyfw FAQ

These questions will be added to the new automated FAQ later.

( This is pretty old, really needs an update.. )

What is this?

floppyfw is a static router with the firewall-capabilities in Linux.

Altho it is called a firewall it does not have all the functtionality we are expecting from a firewall of today. It is basically a Screening router.

I am using this to put my home network behind a box running this and a ADSL modem on the other side. It can of course be used with cable modems and everything else giving you an ethernet port to connect to. It is also used as a basic firewall at some sites not needing proxies.

What is Linux?

WinGate and WinRoute might be a better choice if you have no clue what this is and run Windows. But if you have a spare machine with two network interface cards, you might want to try this anyway.

It seems that I am not able to download the images?

Some versions of Netscape and Internet Explorer are not able to download the images without garbling them. smoe Netscape versions only needs you to use shift-click on the link. Using FTP may be the answer.

Why did you make this?

I wanted a masquerading router between my home network and the single IP ADSL line.

Who is this thingie made for?

Basically, me. But since it's nice to brag about having a "Linux distribution" and "made a firewall", it's here too. Actually, I was asked to put it on the net for someone needing something like this.

How many users does this one support?

Dependant on hardware, many. I've been using this type of setup (Masquerading in Linux) on networks with over thousand PCs

floppyfw now has a PPP package. check the packages directory.

The German fli4l project has this, you may just want to use it instead.

Where are the source code?

All source code made for floppyfw is on the floppy itself, the rest is the source code for the different binaries used which can be found everywhere on the net, like www.kernel.org and busybox.lineo.com

Why not just buy a cheap router like this D-Link box?

Maybe a very good question. Well, for one, flexibility. Are you sure that you can upgrade it to work with the latest network game? At least it may be possible to make your own masquerading module for the game using floppyfw and other Linux based thingies. Chances are someone already did it or posted a howto on how to set it all up on the net.

This particular box has "Supports up to 32 computers". Well, that's not an issue using floppyfw for sure. I'll support a thousand machines with a Pentium and enough RAM without a hitch.

"IP-addresses for up to 128 machines". Well, no restrictions here either.

But these things are small and look good.

Why does it not have telnet or ssh daemons?

Simplicity and security. Without any daemons running it's harder to both crack it and do a denial of service attack against it. And I'm lazy, I don't need so I won't bother making it.

But, if a package becomes available, I will of course put it in the packages directory for everyone to use.
